![]() Between looking at what building patterns pros use or control settings they opt for, newer players can expedite their journey to the top. The learning curve to Fortnite’s building mechanics is a steep one, but newer players can still find ways to grow quickly. ![]() Thus, newer players should mess around with their input settings to see what will allow them to feel the most at ease when building. The most important part of this process though is that they consider what is the most comfortable for them to use. Whether they're playing Fortnite on mouse and keyboard or controller, there’s a reason why many of the pros make videos covering their input customizations: They experiment with different settings and keybinds to find out which options are the quickest for them. However, without the right controller settings or keybinds, learning patterns could still result in slow building. Having muscle memory for quick building patterns is perhaps the most important facet of becoming a master builder, as it simplifies the building process and makes constructing fortresses and almost effortless endeavor. While these patterns are helpful to learn in and of themselves, the best aspect about using them is that players will develop muscle memory. “Double ramping” accelerates building vertically and horizontally, as the process of building a double-layered ramp creates a safe structure that moves forward and upward at the same time. This results in a spiral-like structure that requires less material and is faster to build than a regular four-by-four. Instead, what newer players can do is learn building patterns like “the double 90” or “double ramping.” In the “double 90,” players place up two walls, a floor, and a ramp while turning 90 degrees per floor constructed. Constructing fortresses by placing four walls, a ramp, and a ceiling at a time may create a sturdy structure, but it does not make for fast building. ![]() One way Fortnite pros build structures faster than beginners is to practice specific build patterns that optimize speed and safety. And for newer players who watch entire fortresses built around them as they try to place down a single wall, this speed seems almost impossible to understand let alone execute. Nowadays, being able to build a three-story structure in under a second is the norm of Fortnite. Along with Fortnite's turbo building update in patch 3.0, this led to the rapid growth of players learning how to build quickly. However, over time, savvy fighters recognized that building could be optimized to gain high ground and close distance between opponents. Clips of Ninja and Myth playing in Season 0 show the two legends of the game fumbling just to create a ramp and wall to defend themselves. The meta was one dominated by the double-pump shotgun, so players only used building as a quick way to gain cover while focusing on learning how to exploit the shotgun strategy. When Fortnite first launched in 2017, players were excited by the ability to build but were also still learning the best methods of doing so.
